Oxford shapes the world - help us shape Oxford
Oxford Students’ Union is the representative body of the students at the University of Oxford. Every year in Hilary Term, the Oxford SU Leadership Elections allow students to nominate themselves for a variety of elected positions including as one of our Sabbatical Officers. These elected officers lead the students’ union by ensuring that student’s views are represented in decision-making across the university.
Oxford SU is currently in Transformation. We’re on a mission to turn Oxford SU into a thriving, student-led union where every student feels heard and represented. We're building a union that truly belongs to the students, driven by your voices and focused on your needs.
It’s time to decide what sort of union we want to be by tackling the big questions around how we work with common rooms, societies and Oxford’s many representative groups to deliver impactful change for the Oxford student body. We’re redefining what it means to be truly student-led – giving students power and influence over the impact of the organisation. We’re opening ourselves up through transparency. We want to deliver impact and value for students, the University, common rooms and colleges.
As the leading voice for students at Oxford, we’re committed to representing every aspect of student life—from education to the broader experience that defines life at Oxford.
This year, we’re doing elections a little differently. By the time the elections come around we’ll have completed the first stage of our democracy review, meaning that you could be in line to lead a completely different organisation than the one we are now. So, we’re asking candidates to think about what they can bring to Transformation and how they’ll help us deliver the change we’re hoping to see. What else has changed?
Because we’re in Transformation, there’s a couple of other ways the Hilary Term 2025 elections will be different:.
- This year we will be electing four sabbatical officers instead of 6. We’re currently consulting on what the roles will entail but that information should be ready for Week 0 of Hilary.
- We have simplified the elections bye-laws. These are set to be approved at the all student meeting on 21st of November 2024.
- All of our elections are overseen by a Returning Officer. This person is independent; they ensure that the election is democratic, free and fair. In the past, this role has been held by an elected student; from now onwards this person will be external to the SU. For this year, it will be NUS, who provide a well-respected Returning Officer function.
