College monitor
Data and Advocacy Platform
In May 2024 Oxford SU 2023/2024 President Danial Hussain published the College Disparity Report, a comprehensive 90-page review that revealed the inequalities between Oxford colleges. The findings were featured in the Sunday Times and the ensuing campaign recieved record levels of engagement, with his open letter demanding action to mitigate these receiving significant support from Oxford students.
In the 2024/2025 academic year we take the campaign to its next stage and continue to lead the fight in improving student experience in Oxford.
We recognize that college disparities is a complicated issue - all colleges would be have different student experiences in some dimensions. We also recognize it is an intractable issue - underpinned by challenges in governance and lack of accountability that make the University community fractured.
Therefore, our aim in this new stage of the campaign is to use our collective research ability to empower common rooms to uncover and advocate against ways in which their colleges are lacking; while at the same time, we will campaign at the University and national level on increasing college accountability - to students and to the wider University community.
The College Monitor is the first step in increasing the transparency of colleges and uncovering more of the differences between them, and in that way enabling common rooms to lead evidence-based and data-driven campaigns in their colleges and improve student life. This decentralized effort, coupled with working on improving the reception to student representation across all colleges, is the most sustainable way to make change happen in the collegiate university.
The aim of this platform is not to shame any particular colleges on any particular dimensions, but to help common rooms negotiate a better students experience from an informed starting point and to help applicants make informed choices.
